Kaizen is the Japanese term for “ change for
the good” or continuous improvement. Gemba refers to “On the Manufacturing Floor” or "In The Office", where
ever the action is! Together, they create a spirit that mandates that all improvements begin and are driven by employee actions
on the floor, not in an Engineering Office or Quality Control Department often located rooms, floors or even buildings away
from the action.
Kaizen Events focus a team of people for several days on a specific Product Line, Office, or Manufacturing
process. The objective is to dramatically improve the performance of that process. During
an event, a baseline for current performance is established, training on Lean Manufacturing concepts is conducted, manufacturing
wastes are identified by team members and creative solutions for the elimination of those wastes are implemented. In addition to the immediate results commonly achieved through Kaizen Events, they are a powerful tool
for Continuous Process Improvement and often identify a number of improvement activities that the team can focus on for several
weeks.
